The Coalfields Local History Association Inc. have launched a fundraising appeal to raise money for much needed improvements to the Sir Edgeworth David Memorial Museum in Abermain.

The Sir Edgeworth David Memorial Museum has over 5,000 individual items on display which includes family history resources, household items, photographs, newspapers, maps, sporting items, farming items, military items, musical instruments, radios and televisions and Aboriginal artefacts.

Unfortunately, much of the Museum’s items are unable to be viewed by visitors due to a lack of appropriate storage.

Kim Weller, President of the Coalfields Local Historical Association said the fundraising will be used to purchase six new display cabinets with lighting, which will allow these invaluable historical items to be exhibited with the care and respect they deserve. They also hope to raise enough money to replace the carpet in the Museum.

“We need the support of the community. This is not our Museum, it’s everyone’s. Regional museums like this one are important as they record, preserve and keep alive the history not only for those living here now, but for all those who will live here in the future.”

Clayton Barr MP Member for Cessnock and Meryl Swanson MP Member for Maitland were quick to jump onboard in support, both making personal donations and helping to raise awareness of the appeal.

“It’s a real pleasure to be able to give assistance to the incredible work that happens here at the Museum,” Clayton said.

“I want to thank all the volunteers for the hours they put in preserving our history. Continuously digging and searching, adding layer upon layer to our region’s rich history. It’s time for the community to recognise what a treasure they have here.”

The appeal is hoping to raise at least $5,500, and every dollar donated will get them closer to their goal. Next time you go to fork out $5 on a cup of coffee, why not donate the money instead.

But you don’t have to forgo the coffee, you can pop into the Museum and enjoy a free cuppa, while enjoying some fascinating conversations with the volunteers about our region’s rich history. So why not do that this weekend!
