Throughout 2023 our local mining industry worked hard to support regional communities and the state economy.
Mining was at the forefront of the NSW Government’s budget repair efforts, with an increase in mining royalties. Towards the end of 2023 coal mining jobs hit record levels, with more than 25,000 miners and their families living in our mining communities, including in the Hunter, Illawarra, Lithgow and Gunnedah regions. Our metals mining sector also experienced growth, with several new mines approved last year, laying solid foundations for the future.
2024 is also shaping up to be another challenging year. Several important mining projects will be seeking planning approvals this year to lock in more investment and jobs for NSW. Regional mining communities will also be looking for more support from the NSW Government to ensure they are receiving their fair share of the royalties generated by local mining operations.
With cost of living pressures impacting communities right across the country, our industry will also continue to play an important role strengthening the state economy and providing jobs.
We will also be working to keep people across NSW informed about how mining contributes to our state, with an ongoing advertising campaign to explain how we mine responsibly in NSW – now and into the future.
There will be highlights again this year, including the annual Voice for Mining Family Day at McDonald Jones Stadium, when the Knights will wear their hi-vis miner’s jersey in support of our mining families across NSW. Last year saw the Knights achieve a memorable win over South Sydney in hi-vis, setting up their charge into the finals. We are also hoping for another big season for the Knights’ NRLW team who will be defending back-to-back premierships.
Representing the mining industry is an enormous privilege. Throughout 2024 the NSW Minerals Council will be working to ensure all who depend upon mining are supported by government policies that help our sector grow and prosper.
