The annual 2025 Moranbah Australia Day Triathlon was held on Australia Day with over 100 participants actively engaging in a showcase of fitness, perseverance and community spirit. With the support of Isaac Regional Council, local clubs and volunteers, this year’s event highlighted the dedication of organisers and the strong support of the local community.

Competitors of all ages took on the challenge, from mini kids to seasoned triathletes, showcasing incredible grit and determination. The event brought together families, friends and local sports enthusiasts, all eager to test their endurance and celebrate Australia Day in the best way possible, by getting active.

Jade Hammer, a longtime triathlete and regular competitor at the event, reflected on his journey in the sport.

“I first competed in the Moranbah Biathlon back in 1992 when I was in Year 7. That event ignited my passion for cycling, which eventually took me all the way to the National Titles just four years later. Coming back to Moranbah each year for this triathlon is special, it’s a chance to race on the roads where I first started training.

“The triathlon is incredibly well organised and the course highlights the fantastic facilities Moranbah has to offer, from the Greg Cruickshank Aquatic Centre to the wide, safe roads for cycling and running. It’s a great way to celebrate Australia Day.”

The mix of first-time participants and returning athletes added to the atmosphere, with spectators lining the course to cheer on every competitor.

“I love seeing my kids get involved in this event too. They’ve met like-minded friends through triathlon, just as I did when I was younger.

“For me, one of the biggest highlights is testing myself each year to see how I compare to my past performances. Having grown up training on these roads, it’s always a nostalgic experience.”

Events like this triathlon are a vital part of regional communities, encouraging people of all fitness levels to push their limits in a safe and fun environment. Whether competing solo or as part of a team, every athlete who took part contributed to the success of the event.

Jade summed up the significance of the triathlon for Moranbah and regional towns.

“I think about how that first event in 1992 shaped my passion for the sport. Without it, I might never have pursued cycling and triathlon. Events like this give people the chance to challenge themselves and discover something new. Plus, it brings in athletes from Mackay, Emerald and even Brisbane. Almost everyone I spoke to praised the course and the community spirit here.”

A massive congratulations to everyone who raced, cheered, and volunteered. The energy on the course was electric, and the post-race BBQ gave everyone a chance to share their triumphs and refuel after an action-packed morning.
