Dialogue @ The Coalface

More than 80 teachers and support staff from Muswellbrook High School recently took part in three dedicated mine tours delivered through the Upper Hunter Mining Dialogue’s School Mine Tours Program.

The tours to Mt Arthur Coal, Mangoola and Bengalla Mine, provided educators with firsthand, fact-based insights into modern mining operations and how mining and education can complement each other.

At Mt Arthur Coal, teachers explored the mining process and mine life cycle, from approvals through to rehabilitation, including visits to the pit lookout, rehabilitation areas and maintenance workshops, capped off with interactive Q&A sessions with site leaders.

The Bengalla visit showcased the role of technology in safety and operations, drone demonstrations and simulator training, coal handling and processing, community programs, and environmental management and rehabilitation practices.

At Mangoola, teachers gained an end-to-end view of mining from CHPP processing and logistics through to geology, rehabilitation walk-throughs, advanced technologies, workforce pathways and community impact initiatives.

By stepping onto site and speaking directly with crews, the teachers left with a clearer, practical understanding of how modern mining operates – and how it connects to local jobs, pathways and the curriculum.
