Tell us about the business.
Aquaflo Hire supply the mining, quarry and infrastructure sectors with dewatering systems, gen-sets, evaporation fans, truckfill points, fuel cells and ancillary items required to keep sites safe and operational.
How long have you been in business?
John Rook started Durapower 34 years ago. Eventually it was rebranded as Stratquip. John sold the company to Truflo Pumps 10 years ago, and in 2025 it was rebranded as Aquaflo Hire. Same people, just a new name. So we’re the ‘old kid on the block’. But that means we have the knowledge that only comes with time. John is still with the company – providing us with his years of experience and knowledge in the mining sector.
How many people work for the business?
Between our NSW and Qld bases we have 18 team members – from administration right through to repairs and service as well as marketing and BDMs.
Describe a typical day at ‘the office’.
In one word, full-on (or is that two!). There’s always something going on. BDMs designing and quoting systems; pumps returning from hire; pumpsets being dispatched; pumps being repaired and tested and our marketing person, Martin with his camera, getting shots of the action. In between all of that we manage to squeeze in the odd team BBQ.
What are the biggest challenges facing the business?
No two mine sites or quarries are the same. They have different requirements, whether it’s to do with the type of water they need moved, environmental compliance or health and safety requirements. So, it’s not a one size fits all operation. We carry over 370 pumpsets along with ancillary items so that when we get the call we can provide a solution quickly.
What are the biggest opportunities for the business right now?
We have one of Australia’s largest dewatering fleets, and we’re backed up by our parent company, Truflo Pumps. Which means we’re quick on our feet. We can supply just one pump or a whole fleet – we recently supplied one site with 11 pumpsets – trailer and skid mounted. Being part of Truflo Pumps means we can swap out wet-ends if required – we have the ability and resources to tailor pumpsets to match what the client requires. Many sites are also seeing the advantage of hiring over CAPEX, freeing up funds for other purchases.
What is the business most proud of?
Our customer service. We have a great reputation, built on the fact that we are quick to respond and get pumps out to sites. Easter just gone, when a mine site’s existing pumpset had a catastrophic failure, we had a quote sorted, pump readied for dispatch and out to the site within a day. Finding a trucking company to do it wasn’t easy, but we made it happen. When it comes to designing a dewatering system, we have a solutions based mindset – we work out the best options for our clients so that they can move water efficiently, saving time and money.
Community or other causes close to its heart and values?
Along with Truflo Pumps we support MND, raising funds for much needed research, and the Rapid Response Team who provide emergency & disaster relief. We also take part in a wellness challenge every year.
Any employee that deserve a shoutout?
It may sound cliché, but everyone here plays a part in making Aquaflo Hire successful. Having said that, we have team members who have been with us for a long time, and their knowledge base is irreplaceable. John (30 years), Lindsay (22 years), Rachel (29 years), Michael (9 years), Daniel (19 years). All up, between the team we have around 310 years of experience. And that doesn’t include Truflo Pumps’ years of experience!
