Wind, rain and a little bit of nerves could not dampen the spirit at this year’s Women’s Only Triathlon, where 91 women and girls took to the course in a show of determination, encouragement and community.
Despite being rescheduled due to wet weather, the event still drew solid numbers across the enticer race, team category and Mini Chicks event.
Jessica Jurello claimed first place in the main race with a time of 33.09, followed by Victoria Jocelyn in second place in 33.59 and Mason Torrisi in third with 34.35.
Across the event, 70 women competed in the individual enticer triathlon, nine raced as part of three teams and 12 young girls took part in Mini Chicks.
Mackay Triathlon Club Vice President Jess Hayward said participation had grown significantly since 2023 thanks to the club’s Women’s Only Training Squad.
“We had 21 women sign up for the Women’s Only Training Squad this year, but with the event being rescheduled only 15 were able to compete.
“Through six weeks of personalised group coaching we guide these women through building confidence in the water, on the bike and on the run.
“Every woman we welcome to our squad has her own barriers to overcome, but by the end of the program they are able to race and do themselves proud. The whole field showed grit and determination this year working with less than ideal conditions,” she said.
Among the standout performances was Victoria Jocelyn.

“Twelve months ago, Vic joined our Women’s Only squad and couldn’t even put her face underwater in the pool.
“Twelve months on she has placed second in this event and is registered for Cairns 70.3 this year. What a success she has had.”
The next generation also had its moment, with 12 competitors taking part in Mini Chicks before the main race.
“It teaches them resilience and the knowledge that they can do hard things, and it also exposes them to a highly supportive environment despite triathlon being a solo sport.”
The race also continues to honour the memory of Sonya Brazil, whose name appears on all podium trophies and on the perpetual trophy awarded each year to the winner.
Behind the scenes, the triathlon relies on a strong volunteer effort.
“The whole of the MTC committee works tirelessly to make this event happen, from permits to socials, training and event coordination.
“We also had club members who dragged their husbands in to volunteer as well. In total we had 16 volunteers made up of committee members, club members and their partners and children.”
The supportive culture is what keeps women returning year after year.
“This event is where a lot of women start their triathlon journey. Whether they enter with friends or alone, they always leave with more friends.
“It is an approachable distance for every woman to aim for and there is always a loud finish line to celebrate your success.”
Entries for the next Women’s Only Triathlon will open in December 2026.
“Jump in feet first,” said Jess.
“There is no better introduction to triathlon than this event. We promise you will have a great time.”
