Hunter Valley August 2022

Last month, we were honoured to attend the NSW Mining Health, Safety, Environment & Community (HSEC) Awards alongside hundreds of industry representatives and celebrate innovations and achievements in our industry.

Nine finalists had been selected for their achievements and breakthroughs in four categories: health, safety, environment and community. Every finalist demonstrated our industry’s high standards and commitment to excellence and were deserving of the recognition. It was wonderful to see awards like these acknowledging best practices across our industry.

Best practices in our industry were also encouraged and supported at the NSW Mining HSEC Conference. Leaders and experts from across Australia shared their insights and lessons for a safer, healthier and more sustainable industry. After a two year hiatus, it was great for our industry to be able to come together once again and discuss the challenges and opportunities ahead.

It’s a month of milestones. Monumental milestones.

Muswellbrook Coal will soon dig out coal for the very last time, marking the end of 115 years of operation. Over that time, they have made an enormous contribution to the Muswellbrook community and that is set to continue as they work towards becoming one of the first mines to transition into renewable energy.

It’s also farewell for Peter Constable. On July 7, Peter retired after an incredible 53 years at Hunter Valley Operations. This dragline operator epitomises everything we love about coal miners. Loyal, hardworking and one hundred percent committed to the job. We wish Peter all the best on his well-deserved retirement.

Lastly, we pay tribute to Coal Services who have now been in operation in one form or another for over a century. During that long history they have helped bring about overwhelming improvements in our industry in all areas of health and safety. 100 years on and their mission has not changed – to ensure every worker goes home safe. And there is nothing more important than that.
