Hayden Cumming’s rise from local leagues in Moranbah to representing Scotland on the international rugby stage is a story of dedication, family roots, and a true passion for rugby league.
Starting out with the Moranbah Miners at just six years old, Hayden’s love for sport was clear early on. He tried his hand at AFL with the Moranbah Bulldogs and rugby union with Mackay Junior Rugby Union.
“I love all sports, but my true passion is for League.”
While Hayden’s career began in Australia, his connection to Scotland offered a unique path forward. Born in Inverness, with family ties in Braemar, Hayden’s heritage made him eligible to represent Scotland.
“We saw Scotland Rugby League were looking for players, and I was eligible to apply.”
After sending his highlights and impressing selectors, he was invited to trial and was selected to play for the U18 team in the Four Nations competition.
He then advanced to the U19 European Championships in Serbia, where he played against teams from England, France, Serbia, Ukraine, and the USA.
“I even ended up being Fullback of the tournament.”
Hayden’s standout performances secured him a place on the men’s open team, marking a significant milestone in his career.
Off the field, Hayden balances his work commitments at Moranbah’s Black Nugget with his sporting pursuits.
“I am truly thankful to them for letting me have time off when I need it,” he said, appreciating the flexibility that allows him to train, compete, and travel.
Wearing the #1 jersey for Scotland in his men’s team debut against Ireland was a moment Hayden will never forget.
“I felt immense pride to wear the jersey for the country I was born in.
“My family have always helped and backed me, from the early days with the Miners to travelling around the world in the last few years.
“Without them, my dream wouldn’t be able to become a reality.”
He also credits his grassroots clubs in Moranbah and Mackay, including the Miners, Magpies, and Mackay Cutters, along with his coaches and managers, for their guidance along the way.
Among his career highlights, Hayden recalls winning the Queensland schoolboys’ grand final with St Patrick’s in the Aaron Payne Cup during his year 12.
Yet, the journey hasn’t been without its challenges.
“My biggest challenge was when I damaged my syndesmosis just before I was due to fly out to Scotland for trials.”
It was a setback that tested his determination but ultimately strengthened his resolve.
For young players in Moranbah who aspire to similar achievements, Hayden’s advice is simple yet powerful.
“Always believe in yourself.”
Looking to the future, Hayden has one goal in mind.
“Future goals are just to go as far as I can in the rugby league community.”
Whether in Australia or Scotland, Hayden remains focused on building his career and inspiring the next generation of players. With his determination, skill, and the support of those around him, Hayden Cumming is well on his way to making a lasting mark in the rugby league world.
