Boxing @ The Coalface

After successful events in 2023 and 2024, Singleton PCYC is back with its Pit Express Amateur Boxing Night on February 21. It’s one of the club’s biggest fundraisers, but also a chance for members of its boxing program to get in the ring and compete.

Three club members, Ethan Upward, Ethan Buttifant and Josh Hammond, are taking no prisoners in their preparation for the event, turning up early for training and leaving late.

Entries are still open and organisers expect around 20 fights on the night. Divisions range from 45kg lightweights through to 90kg-plus heavyweights, attracting some of the top names in the amateur scene.

The Singleton trio are keen to see who signs up.

While fight nights like this are common in metro areas, they’re rare in regional towns, so entries are traditionally strong. The event isn’t limited to PCYC members and is expected to draw top amateur boxers from across NSW.

“If you are prepared to travel you will find a metro competition most weekends but not so much in regional areas so we anticipate keen interest from both regional and metropolitan fighters,” said Club Coach Christian Thomas.

Christian refused to forecast how the locals would go and said much would depend on their weights heading into the ring.

Asked what makes a competitive boxer, Christian said it all comes down to discipline and stamina – especially stamina.

“You could have the most skilled fighter in the world walk into the ring but if they haven’t got the stamina to last three two-minute rounds, they won’t get anywhere,” Christian said.

“It is not about punching, it is about discipline,” he said.

Singleton PCYC’s boxing program runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with juniors training from 4-5pm and seniors 5-6pm. Amateur competitions are open to anyone 14 years and over.

PCYC Manager David Andrews said the club has delivered a strong boxing program for many years, initially guided by respected local Col MacDonald. Christian Taylor has been head coach for about 12 months after coaching in Newcastle.

The event will be held at Singleton Civic Centre on February 21.
Doors open at 5pm, with the first fight at 5:30pm.
Food vans selling steak sandwiches will be on site, and the event is fully licenced. Tickets are available from the club now, with a limited number possibly available at the door.
A select number of corporate tables for six people ringside are also available. For enquiries, call the club on 6572 1653.
