Feeling Hot

A burger so hot that you have to sign a waiver and wear goggles and gloves to eat it. “Sign me up,” I said.

Everyone loves a burger and chips and Burger Urge, located in The Courtyard Green Hills, has a delicious selection. So, when I saw a new sign about Australia’s Hottest Burger, I was up at the counter in a flash.

Curiosity always gets the better of me when it comes to food and I will try anything once, but I promise you I won’t be going back for seconds of the Double Decker Death Wish Burger (true to its name).

The burger features two angus beef patties, bacon, cheese, pickles, jalapenos, tomato, lettuce and ghost chillies sauce. The sauce is a deathly concoction of the world’s hottest chillies including the Carolina Reaper, Ghost Chillies, Chocolate Bhutlah and Big Yellow Mama.

The sauce measures over 2,200,000 on the Scoville heat scale, about 700 times hotter than your average jalapeno. After doing some research, I read about three cases of ambulances being called to the restaurants for chilli-induced panic attacks. I honestly wish I read this before ordering.

‘I accept all risks and medical responsibilities in the event of injury or illness’ the waiver states and not to mention the giant skull and cross bone shaped chillies at the top. I was so naive.

I took my first bite and initially thought it wasn’t so bad, boy was I wrong, so horribly wrong. I took three bites in total of the burger and that’s all I could manage. I had tears streaming from my eyes, my stomach churning, and I thought I was going to pass out.

I love chilli and I love spicy food, but this was honestly more than I could handle. I can’t really imagine anyone being able to eat the entire burger, it’s just that hot. My partner found the whole ordeal hilarious and gave me the good old “I told you so.”

I shoved down the fries as fast as I could trying to get rid of the burn, skulled my Pepsi and downed the chocolate that came on the plate. I will give you some advice, definitely order a milkshake or three with the burger because you’ll be begging for some milk.

Let’s just say I had to go home straight after, I couldn’t physically walk around the shops without feeling nauseous and for the next two days the bathroom was my best friend.

Honestly, if you are a chilli lover and a thrill seeker, this is definitely something you need to experience for yourself. You don’t know what hot is until you’ve tried the Double Decker Death Wish.
