Goonyella family day

Goonyella Riverside and Broadmeadow Family Days are a celebration of family and mining, giving loved ones the opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes at the BMA sites, but with a bit more play than a usual work day!

The Family Days at Goonyella and Broadmeadow were coordinated by the Family Day committee which had support from the senior leadership team who embraced their roles as site tour leaders with immense pride and enthusiasm.

Vaughn Abrams, General Manager Goonyella Riverside Mine, said the events were designed to foster a stronger sense of community and connection within the Goonyella Riverside family in a vibrant and engaging atmosphere.

“The overwhelmingly positive feedback highlighted the success of these gatherings in strengthening community bonds and creating lasting memories,” he said.

“The support of our families is important to our employees and Goonyella.”

Attracting over 450 visitors to the mine, families journeyed from Moranbah, Mackay, Rockhampton and even as far as Newcastle and Perth to join the fun.

Families of all shapes and sizes came to immerse themselves in life at Goonyella and Broadmeadow. Their visit included tours of the workshop and pit, an equipment simulator and mining 101 to give them a background and real insight into what goes on at the site.

Visitors also enjoyed a showcase of underground equipment, underground and workshop tours and a fire ground demonstration. Guided tours of the administration buildings and operational areas gave a glimpse into the daily workings of the mine.

Peter Baker, General Manager of Broadmeadow Mine, said the highlight of the family day was definitely the underground tour, where over 400 attendees got a taste of life below the surface.

“Our goal was to give families a better understanding of what it means to work underground, show our people we care about them and their families and share the spirit of Broadmeadow with the wider community. We’re thrilled to have achieved that and more,” Peter said.

Both the Goonyella Riverside and the Broadmeadow family days are not only a wonderful experience, but they also give the workforce a sense of pride and satisfaction to be able to show off what they do each day.
