Being immersed in mining for a day was a welcome break from the classroom for a group of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students last month.
Year 10 students from the Clontarf Foundation’s Wellington Academy took part in the immersive Miner for a Day program, which included a guided tour of Moolarben Coal and its workshops. The visit gave students a behind-the-scenes look at an operational mine and the diverse career pathways the mining industry offers.
The day also celebrated the long-standing partnership between Yancoal and the Clontarf Foundation, a collaboration that supports young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men through education, life skills, and meaningful employment opportunities.
Students were welcomed with a site overview before touring the mine to see first-hand how operations are managed. The visit concluded with a BBQ lunch, giving students the chance to connect with Moolarben team members and learn more about their roles and career journeys.
Yancoal has proudly partnered with the Clontarf Foundation since 2016 through its national Community Support Program. Initiatives like Miner for a Day provide students with real-world experiences that inspire, educate, and encourage them to explore new possibilities.
“Our partnership with Yancoal is about giving our boys the confidence and independence to take the next step beyond school,” said Mason Williams, Clontarf Foundation Wellington Academy Director.
“They come here and see real opportunities, and it shows them what adult life and full-time employment is all about. Experiences like this make them feel job ready, excited, and motivated about their future.”
Brian Wesley, General Manager at Moolarben Coal said the Clontarf Foundation does incredible work they’re proud to support.
“It’s great to host the Clontarf students at Moolarben and showcase the career opportunities available in mining. They were able to tour the workshops and see first-hand how our operations run day to day.”
