When the festive season rolls around in Clermont, there’s one man who steps up to bring Christmas magic to the community, Shane Nixon.

For years, Shane has volunteered as Clermont’s Santa, delighting children and families with his warm, jolly demeanour. While he lives in Emerald, Shane’s commitment to creating special moments for Clermont’s youngest residents makes him a true community champion.

Shane’s journey as Clermont’s Santa began nine years ago, thanks to his sister.

“I was asked by my sister if I would do it, as part of getting the Christmas spirit going in the town. Maybe it’s because I have the build for it, but mostly it’s my love of Christmas that got me into it.

“When I put on that suit, I am Santa. It’s not about me, it’s about the kids. Their excitement, the way their faces light up, even the cheeky ones, it makes it all worthwhile.”

For Shane, it’s the joy of the children that keeps him coming back each year.

“The kids can be so funny; some will pull at the beard to see if it’s real. Others will ask all sorts of questions, like, ‘How do you fit down the chimney?’ or ‘Where’s Rudolph today?’ It’s all part of the fun.”

Though Shane primarily volunteers in Clermont as Santa, his community involvement spans a much wider area.

“I don’t do a lot directly in Clermont beyond playing Santa, but I’ve been involved in regional and club-level sporting associations and school P&Cs over the years, it’s important to contribute where you can.”

Wearing the Santa suit, however, isn’t always easy, especially in Queensland’s summer heat.

“That suit gets ridiculously hot! But you power through it because it’s not about you. Seeing the joy it brings to families is what matters most.”

Shane is a firm believer in the value of volunteering, regardless of the role.

“It doesn’t have to be anything big, just showing up and being part of something is enough. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about being present.”

Outside his volunteer work, Shane enjoys life in Emerald with his family and staying involved in local community activities.

His advice for others considering volunteering?

“Give it a go, you might find it’s one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do. Even small efforts can make a big difference.”

This Christmas, as Clermont’s children eagerly await Santa’s visit, they’ll find a kind and caring man behind the beard, ready to make their day magical. Shane Nixon’s generosity of spirit and dedication to giving back make him a deserving Community Champion.
