I was greeted at the door with a smile by Sommelier Pat Hester and took a seat outside with the menu and a champagne soon to follow. The thing about Yellow Billy is that the entire team absolutely love what they do, and their passionate knowledge about the food and meats they cook and serve is intriguing.
The menu is a flexible sharing menu to suit any of you dining needs, unique to the Valley. It’s perfect for a family or work function or a beautiful lunch or dinner between friends.
I let Pat choose my dishes, ‘surprise me’ I thought as I scoured the menu and struggled to choose between the list of delicious meals, and he did not disappoint.
Pat gave me a detailed explanation of every dish served, from the ingredients to how it was cooked to where it was sourced. My entrées arrived promptly, the Baba Ghanoush served with binnorie feta, pinenuts and flatbread, and the Pork Jowl and Ham Croquettes with dijon mustard and shaved smoked pigs’ heart. Both dishes were absolutely delicious. One interesting thing Pat noted was the shaved pig’s heart – Yellow Billy ensure they use all of the beast with no waste.
For the mains, I was served the Merrifield Suckling Pig with jus, apple jam and crackling, and the Pukara Estate Lamb with jus and pigs peake verjuice mint jelly. My sides included the Crispy Kipfler Potatoes with confit garlic, long red chillies, rosemary and preserved lemon, and the Green Salad with fresh peas, zucchini and asparagus.
The meat was succulent and perfectly cooked and paired with the potatoes and fresh salad it was a yummy combination. The apple jam and mint jelly complemented the meats with each mouthful.
It was time for dessert, and I swear I had already put on a few kilos, but the show must go on. Out came the Wood Roasted Pineapple and Coconut Trifle and all I can say is, oh my gosh. I was in heaven with the sweet fire roasted pineapple and fresh sponge creating a fresh and fruity flavour. It’s safe to say that it was the perfect ending to a delectable 3 courses.
Not to forget the progressive list of local, national and International wines, the selection is perfectly paired with anything off the grill. Go visit the team at Yellow Billy today, it will be a dining experience to remember.
