This month we celebrated the achievements of some remarkable women at the NSW Women in Mining Awards.

In addition to recognising women in our industry who are making an impact, the Awards also acknowledge the companies who are driving initiatives to support inclusiveness and gender diversity.

Since women first started breaking into the mining industry in the late 1960’s we have seen enormous change, however there is still a long way to go.

Across Australia, the resources sector employs more than 270,000 people yet only 52,000 of those are women. Women are still vastly underrepresented in mining operations, management positions, and technical roles, and face various barriers and challenges, including discrimination, harassment, and a lack of support for work-life balance.

These awards, and all the other programs, initiatives and events aimed at increasing the participating of women in mining are crucial in helping break down the barriers and creating new possibilities for the next generation of women.

Because you can’t be what you can’t see.

A diverse workforce has been shown to improve company culture, performance and returns. It leads to greater innovation, improved safety outcomes and strengthens relationships with community.

But most importantly, it allows everyone to bring their whole selves to work.

So join us in celebrating not only these remarkable women, but every woman who has helped pave the way.
