Australia backs sanctions against Chinese officials over ‘human rights abuses’ against Uighurs

In a joint statement with New Zealand, Australia has backed international sanctions against two Chinese officials for serious human rights abuses against Uighur Muslims. Among other mistreatment of the ethnic minority, it’s believed about one million people have been detained over the past few years in what the Chinese state defines as “re-education” camps, where allegations of torture, forced labour and sexual abuse have emerged.
