Ardern said the lockdown was in response to a new community case found on Saturday afternoon that did not have a clear link to a small cluster of cases already in the south of the city.
The new case, a 21-year-old man, lives with a student who attends a high school at the centre of a COVID-19 cluster that was discovered on February 14.
