After a mid-year update published in December, treasurers and Treasury officials turn their minds in late January and early February to the next budget.
In 2020, the promise of last year’s budget the first surplus in 13 years would be locked in and delivered. So confident was the government that the Liberal Party started selling coffee mugs with “back in black” emblazoned on them.
