‘We make our own decisions’: Australia-US vow to counter China at AUSMIN talks – Sydney Morning Herald

While celebrating Australia’s long-standing strategic alliance with the US, Marise Payne stressed that Australia would promote its own national interests.



“Let me reiterate that we make our own decisions,” she said.
Following the meetings, the ministers vowed to pursue “practical ways to strengthen our ability to address a range of challenges in a more contested Indo-Pacific, from countering malign grey-zone tactics to deterring aggression in the region”.
Grey-zone tactics refer to hostile state-sponsored activities that don’t rise to the level of outright war, such as disinformation campaigns and cyber intrusions.
